Preparing your projected digital images for competition

Email your images to Brian Young at least 3 days before the competition.(formbybay@aol.com )

The Club has purchased a specialist programme that helps set up and run various types of digital image competitions. To allow it to work with minimum interference the presentation of the images must be to a particular format.

For a club competition these are:-

The max. three images allowed must be in a folder labeled with the entrants name and the competition title .

e.g. Brian Young Portraits and People

Each images name would be a sequence number (indicating the order you would like your entry to be shown in) followed by the images title.

That is :- sequence number space image title

e.g.  01 Beautiful model

Please note. With this new software there is no need for you to put the title on the image itself.

Each contestant is allowed a maximum of 3 images.

The images must be jpeg files in a colour space of sRGB and have a Black background having a maximum width of 1400 pixels (px) and a maximum height of 1050px

Digital entries must reach the Competition Secretary at least 3 days before the date of the competition via email (formbybay@aol.com) ;memory stick; or CD

All images must have been taken within the last 3 years.

The same image cannot be entered as a digital slide and print in the same competition.

Instructions on how to prepare your digital images for submission in a competition

Please note although these instructions are for Photoshop CS they can apply to most photo editors.

1 Prepare your sized black background

In your photo editor ensure that your background colour is set to black (press the 'D' key on your keyboard to set default {black foreground and white background} and then 'switch' them by pressing the 'x' key.

click 'File', 'New'. This opens a window something like this:-

Set the parameters as above 'Width' 1400 pixels, Height 1050 pixels and Resolution 72. Click OK and it will open what will be the background for your Projected Digital Image.

Colour mode RGB: 8 bit

Background Contents Background Color.

If you now name this PDI Background and then click Save Preset you can call up this black, sized background at any time

2 Open your chosen image, then click on 'Image', then 'Image Size'. In some software it may be under 'Resample'. Set the resolution to 72, leaving the 'Resample Image' box unchecked, as shown below.

Then check/tick the 'Resample Image' box, making the 'Pixel Dimensions' active, and set the width of your chosen image to 1400 pixels, and height to 1050 pixels. If you want the black border all around your image then make your image smaller ie. 1000 and 1300; best to experiment.

3 If you want a thin white border around your image now's the time to do it. Go to 'Select' then 'All' or 'ctrl+A' on your keyboard. This puts the 'marching ants' around your image. Go to 'Edit' then 'Stroke'. This brings up the window below. Set the parameters as shown. If the 'Color' is black follow instructions below. '1 pixel' will place a thin crisp white line around your image.

4 This next step places your image on the Black Background.

Arrange your screen so that both the black background and your image can both be seen.

Select the 'Move' tool or 'V' on your keyboard.

With the cursor over your image press and hold the left mouse button dragging it over to your background. Pressing the 'Shift' key on your keyboard as you release the mouse button ensures your image is perfectly centred over the background.

You will now have two 'Layers', the black background which is fixed and your image resting on top, which is 'floating'; in other words your image can be altered or edited without effecting the background providing it is 'Selected' in the 'Layers' palette; which it will be, if you followed the steps above.

If you are happy with the result, you can now 'flatten' your image. This fixes your image onto the background. To do this go to your 'Layers' palette and select 'Flatten'.

Go to 'File', 'Save As' and save your image as a jpeg to your desktop, for convenience, with the number [01 or 02 or 03 ) a space and then the  title eg 01 flower . Email your images to Brian Young at least 3 days before the competition.(formbybay@aol.com )
